Co-ops, Collectible and Antique stores are great place to look for books. If you live near a large city yo might find 30 to 40 stores of this type. All of the owners of these stores or co-ops have their own routes and this means you have people looking and searching in areas that you are not able to get to.
Let's say you're looking for the 1960's tan Hardy Boys series. You let it be known to several of the dealers that you want to purchase this type of collectible. Some will eventually show up.
Collectible and rare books all show up in these stores. Rare book dealers and used store owners will also show up to look, so the competition can be tough. All you can do is to add it to your route and hit it when ever you pass by. Books are always being added and its only a matter time before you pick up a couple of treasures.
Skills in pricing are always helpful when you are dealing with a lot of books. If you are buying to resale for a profit then you need to go to school on in general so you have an idea of what you are doing. You can make money, but there is a learning curve that will make you a smarter and more successful buyer.
Now I do not want to offend any of the dealers who have booths in these co-ops, but they are learning too as you cannot expect to know everything about all antiques. A glass dealer, who really knows glass, will come across a box of books really cheap, and throws them in her booth. Why not? Everybody sells books.
Everybody has their own favorite stops where they hunt for interesting and collectible reads. You just have to go everywhere until you find out where you get your best books and then concentrate on these sources.
The rule of thumb is to never pass up anyplace where books tend to show up. You never know what you will find. This has been proven over and over again.!
I recommend highly investigating being a full time or part time Book Scout. If you need $20 or $100 tomorrow a book scout is trained to put cash in their pockets everyday. Book Sellers need books. When a Book Scout knows the tricks of the business, they can put cash in their pocket everyday. I know, I was a full time Book Scout and owned two Used Book Stores for over then years.
